Southside’s Community Art Project involved children and young people at each of our Community Hub Groups over the school year. Our Art Intervention Worker led monthly workshops with each group to enable children to try different creative techniques, exploring and experimenting with a range of materials. These include marbling, stencils, rubbings and wax resist, watercolours, map making and stamps.
The groups chose to create beautiful large collages over the year, each created as a kind of map, illustrating their communities, local nature and history. They chose:
Fox Hill
Prior Park and Ralph Allen, first postal service and Penny Black stamp, Rainbow Woods and Fairy Wood, woodland animals
Twerton and Whiteway (Bath City Farm)
chickens, alpacas, goats, pigs, views of Bath, local author Dick King Smith (Babe), ponds, insects and wildlife.
Writhlington
giant Dragonfly fossil discovered locally and the famous Orchid collection grown at Writhlington School
Keynsham
the myth of Welsh Princess, St Keyna, turned snakes in the marshes to stones (local ammonite fossils thought to be her ‘snakestones’), many different houses on the surrounding estate
Each group also has a scrapbook containing other artwork they created as part of this project. We hope to display the collages in local community spaces so watch this space for more news on this!
Many thanks to the Bath Half Marathon Fund for their kind support for this project.
