New support for children and parents affected by domestic abuse in Bath and North East Somerset thank to Freemasons

26 June 2026

Survivors of domestic abuse and their children will now benefit from ‘step down’ support to deal with the impact of the trauma on relationships, mental health, education and wellbeing, thanks to support from Somerset Freemasons to the Southside charity.

The £60,000 grant will help children and parents who have been affected by domestic abuse to deal with the impact of the trauma on their relationships, mental health, education and wellbeing. The specialist support from Southside’s experienced Worker will also connect them to creative activities, therapeutic play, mentoring, counselling and the charity’s Community Hub Groups.

The funding will make a significant difference to the lives of children affected by domestic abuse and trauma by helping them to be better able to manage their feelings and improve their social skills, confidence and self-esteem. The support for parents who have experienced domestic abuse help to improve and strengthen relationships and connection with their children.

The need for this support is increasing in Bath and North East Somerset as there were 2,353 recorded domestic abuse crimes in the area during 2025/26. This was an 8 per cent increase from the previous year. The number of recorded domestic abuse crimes with involvement of young people also increased and was over 1,400 during the year.

Children who have experienced or witnessed domestic abuse often struggle to form safe, meaningful relationships and friendships. Evidence shows that trauma can lead to lifelong mental and physical health issues, struggling in school, and getting involved in risky behaviours.

The grant from Somerset Freemasons comes through the Masonic Charitable Foundation, which is funded by Freemasons, their families and friends, from across England and Wales.

Penny McKissock, Southside CEO said: “We’re very grateful to Somerset Freemasons for their generous grant to help children and parents affected by domestic abuse across Bath and North East Somerset. This means we can support some of the most vulnerable children and adults in our community to overcome the trauma they have experienced, and access specialist support and opportunities, to be able to thrive.”

Mike Greedy from Somerset Freemasons, said: “We’re delighted to support Southside and the vital work they do for children and parents affected by domestic abuse. Seeing first-hand the care, compassion and specialist support provided by Penny and her team reinforced just how important these services are to families across Bath and North East Somerset. We hope this grant from the Freemasons’ Charity will help vulnerable children and adults recover from trauma, rebuild confidence and look forward to a safer and brighter future.”.
